My favorite Jewish Studies class is Bible as Lit, or as it’s affectionately known, Bible IS Lit. My favorite part of Jewish Studies, other than the classes, is the people. You’re never lonely when you enter this space, and are always greeted by the most wonderful faces. I became a Jewish Studies major because not only are the classes fascinating and fabulous, but the community and pride I get in my Jewish Identity is unrivaled to any other experience I’ve had.

I love being a Jewish Studies major because it offers in-depth knowledge of Jewish history and culture while bridging the past and present. My favorite part is how the courses intertwine literature, religion, philosophy, and language, all providing a broader understanding of Jewish identity and thought. The best thing about the Jewish Studies lounge is that it’s a warm and inviting place where I can study, relax, and engage in discussions. The community is incredibly supportive and friendly, encouraging academic growth and lasting friendships.

I chose to study Jewish Studies because I was drawn to its rich literature and culture, areas I had never ventured into before. One of the most impactful courses I’ve taken here is Jews of Harlem where I learned about the historical significance of European Jewish immigration to Harlem during World War I and its lasting impact on American history. The program’s focus on niche, often overlooked topics offers a unique academic experience that continually broadens my perspective. Paired with this community of lovely people, these compelling courses make the Jewish Studies program one of the most meaningful parts of my experience as a City College student.

As a freshman, I couldn’t make a better choice than joining the Jewish Studies program. As a Jewish immigrant in New York, I find this place to be my second home. I often spend my days in the lounge, surrounded by amazing people whom I always learn new things from and who have become my friends. My education about the Jewish world expanded beyond the knowledge I had from my background, and I learned new points of view like eschatology in my favorite class: Apocalypse Now. I will always remember the first time I went to a Jewish Studies Graduation, an event which made me proud of my choice of being part of this amazing place.
