LITERATURE, ART AND THE BLUES AESTHETIC - How has the feeling of the blues, the attitude of the blues, the philosophy of the blues, that is, the 揵lues aesthetic� affected music, literature and other forms of art? In this interdisciplinary course, we will explore literature of writers Jean Toomer, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and others whose work is informed and influenced by the blues. We will examine paintings and photographs of Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Roy DeCarava and others to look to 搒ee� blues and jazz. And, we will listen to the music of blues musicians, including Ma Rainey, Leadbelly, and Lightnin� Hopkins. We will study the ideas of important literary and cultural theorists who have explored the influence of the blues and jazz on American experience.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND UNCLE SAM'S FEDERAL THEATRE PROJECT - This interdisciplinary history and theater course will touch upon many historical issues, personalities, and theatrical events, but will concentrate on One-Third of a Nation, a play about the national housing crisis of the time. One-Third of a Nation opens the way to investigate such 1930s questions as: What caused the Great Depression?; How did it affect the average person?; What measures did the federal government take to solve the economic crisis?; and How does the situation in One-Third of a Nation compare and contrast to the economic and housing crises of 2008?
