Location: Marshak 801 Hours/Credits 2 hours per week, 1 credit Course Coordinator Mark Pezzano, Associate Professor Marshak 632 office/609 lab mpezzano@ccny.cuny.edu Office Hours: Mondays 11:00 AM - noon Catalog Description Recent developments and trends in the field of biology. Required of all candidates for the M.A. degree. Course objectives By the time a research discovery appears in print, it is already six months to one year old. Research seminars, including oral presentations at scientific meetings, are the primary means that new research findings are communicated to the scientific community ahead of publication. This course consists of weekly seminars by leading biologists talking about their most recent research findings. Students are expected to understand these presentations, engage in scientific discourse by asking questions of the speakers, and to further investigate some topics of interest. Learning Objectives1. Develop effective listening skills for understanding new, technical information delivered orally2. Stimulate interest in novel, cutting-edge areas of biological research3. Develop skills for reading the primary biological literature4. Use online scientific literature databases to find journal articles on a topic 5. Summarize information from seminars and readings in writing with a terse, scientific style Required readings Approximately one week before each seminar, 1-2 required readings from the primary literature will be posted on Blackboardgenerally authored by that weeks speaker. These papers should be read prior to that speakers lecture. Research reports Each student is expected to turn in one summary report. The report will be based on a single research seminar, and should 1) summarize the general question(s) addressed by the research, providing background information where necessary; 2) discuss the model system chosen to address these question(s); 3) describe the outcome of the research; 4) suggest future questions stimulated by the research; and 5) include a Literature Cited section. The papers should be double-spaced in 12-point Times font with 1-inch margins all around. They should be at least 4 paragraphs long and at most 2 pages long, and should cite at least five sources from the primary literature. The Literature Cited section will not be included in the report length. Citations may adhere to any format, but all citations must use the same style. Students should avail themselves of Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com), Web of Knowledge (http://ccny-proxy1.libr.ccny.cuny.edu/login?url=http://www.isiknowledge.com/), PubMed (http://ccny-proxy1.libr.ccny.cuny.edu/login?url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=nycucclib), and other online resources to find relevant literature. Reports will be graded on their content, grammar, and adherence to these formatting guidelines. DEADLINE FOR RESEARCH REPORT Report is due on or before Dec 13th Attendance Policy: Attendance is required and will be assessed via sign-in sheet. Every student is allowed one excused absence for any reason. Second and subsequent absences will only be excused with a doctors note, the obituary of a family member, or other similarly substantive reason. Lectures will begin promptly at 1pm, and students should finish assigned readings and preparation before class. GradingAttendance 50%Participation during seminars (ask questions every week) 20%Summary report 30% Relationship of course to program outcomes The outcomes of this course reinforce these important scientific skills: identifying new areas of research reading and evaluating primary research literature explaining the empirical basis for current theory organizing, formatting, and presenting data effectively in written form Academic Integrity The CUNY Policy on plagiarism says the following about plagiarism (the CUNY Policy can be found in Appendix B.3 of the CCNY Undergraduate Bulletin 2009 -2011; http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/CCNYBulletin/upload/CCNY09-11UG-REV.pdf): Plagiarism is the act of presenting another persons ideas, research or writings as your own. The following are some examples of plagiarism, but by no means is it an exhaustive list: 1. Copying another persons actual words without the use of quotation marks and footnotes attributing the words to their source. 2. Presenting another persons ideas or theories in your own words without acknowledging the source. 3. Using information that is not common knowledge without acknowledging the source. 4. Failing to acknowledge collaborators on homework and laboratory assignments. 5. Internet plagiarism includes submitting downloaded term papers or parts of term papers, paraphrasing or copying information from the internet without citing the source, and cutting and pasting from various sources without proper attribution. The City College Faculty Senate has approved a procedure for addressing violations of academic integrity, which can also be found in Appendix B.3 of the CCNY Undergraduate Bulletin. Be aware that if we suspect plagiarism we will report your conduct to the Colleges Academic Integrity Official. Disciplinary sanctions range from failing the class to expulsion from the college.
