Such proton-coupled electron transfer\n(PCET) re actions are central to interfacial chemical processes from\ncatalysis to c orrosion. To understand these processes\, the Mayer lab\nhas focused on st oichiometric reactions of small colloidal\nnanoparticles (NPs). The colloi ds have high concentrations of reactive\nsurface and are therefore amenabl e to techniques used for molecules in\nsolution. For example\, changes in the coverage of hydrogen on NPs have\nbeen measured by simple optical titr ation experiments. Because H• is\nequivalent to H+ plus e–\, transfers of H are PCET reactions and can\nbe studied in diverse ways. The systems examined include aqueous gold\,\ntitanium dioxide\, and iridium dioxide na noparticles\, cerium oxide and\niron carbide nanoparticles in aprotic solv ents\, nickel oxide films on\nelectrodes\, and high surface area cobalt ph osphide. The binding\nenergies of H to these materials have been determine d by equilibration\nand/or electrochemically. The surface–H bond strengt h is not a\nsingle value\, as for a molecule\, but varies with surface cov erage. The\nchange in the bond strength can be quite large\, up to 14 kcal mol-1\n(0.7 eV)\, which corresponds to a change in Keq of 1010. The kinet ics\nof H-transfer reactions depend strongly on these NP–H bond\nstrengt hs\, following traditional linear free energy relationships (in\nsome ways ). Thus\, H atoms on NPs at high hydrogen coverages (with\nweaker NP–H b onds) react more slowly that those at low coverages.\nDespite the variety of materials and their range of surface structures\nand electronic structu res\, common features of their reactions are\nbeginning to emerge. These f eatures are likely to play a central role\nin interfacial reactivity.\n\nB IOGRAPHY: James M. Mayer (Jim) is the Charlotte Fitch Roberts\nProfessor o f Chemistry at Yale University. CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\nABSTRACT:\n\nThis lecture will be primarily b ased on my book \"Open Dynamical\nSystems: Statistics\, Geometry\, and The rmodynamic Formalism\"\nco-authored with Tushar Das\, Giulio Tiozzo\, and Anna Zdunik. The\nstarting dynamical system will be given by any countable alphabet\nfinitely primitive subshift of finite type and the invariant Gi bbs\nstate of a 1-cylinder summable Holder continuous potential φ. The\nh oles defining open systems will then be formed by collections of open\nset s with appropriately constrained thin boundaries. They will\nnaturally lea d to singularly perturbed transfer operators associated\nwith the potentia l φ.\n\nThe talk will develop conditionally invariant measures and surviv ing\nsets. The surviving variational principle\, the existence and\nunique ness of surviving equilibrium states\, the asymptotic of\nperturbed leadin g eignevalues\, and escape rates when holes approach a\ngiven hole will be discussed. The logarithms of leading perturbed\neigenvalues will turn out to be equal to topological pressures defined\nby means of the surviving v ariational principle. Also\, stochastic\nproperties of surviving equilibri a such as exponential decay of\ncorrelation\, the Central Limit Theorem\, the Law of Iterated Logarithm\,\nand the Almost Sure Invariance Principle will be discussed. All these\nobjects will be produced and studied in our dynamical setting by means\nand applications of the Keller-Liverani Pertur bation Theorem.\n\nApplications to real systems will also be discussed. It will be shown\nthat in such a context in Euclidean spaces\, virtually all Euclidean\nballs taken as holes give rise to \"controlled\" open systems. In\nparticular\, these holes need not be dynamically defined\, such as\nu nions of cylinders of the same length. For conformal systems\, the\nasympt otic of Hausdorff dimension of surviving sets will also be\ncomputed.\n DTSTAMP:20250503T172813Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:ec5aeca2-57d6-407e-bcb7-b92b930736d7 DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20250508T180000 SEQUENCE:0 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20250508T184500 URL:/calendar/ccny-cwe-admissions-workshop-online- ccny-cwe-25-broadway-1 LOCATION:Event Location Online SUMMARY:CCNY CWE Admissions Workshop | Online | at CCNY CWE (25 Broadway) CLASS:PUBLIC DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\n-------------------------\n\nCCNY CWE  ADMIS SIONS WORKSHOP | ONLINE\nAT CCNY CWE (25 BROADWAY)\n\nSIGNUP NOW [https:// www.ccny.cuny.edu/cwe/admissions-workshops]\n\nLocated in the heart of NYC 's Financial District at 25 Broadway\, the\nCCNY Division of Interdiscipli nary Studies at the Center for Worker\nEducation (CCNY CWE) provides under graduate and graduate programs\ntailored for NYC's working adults.
